Quickie version

A registered architect since 1990, I have been practicing for 25 years. Since 1998, sustainable design has been my specialty. Past work includes award-winning green residential design; owner advising on green institutional projects; organizational sustainability initiatives, LEED Rating System coordination, and Climate Action Planning.

From 1990 to 2008, I taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Architecture. I helped to form and lead an interdisciplinary, academic/professional design team for their 2007 Solar Decathlon entry, LEAFHouse, which placed first in the U.S, second overall.

 Story behind the story

I see a future of connection and community that is affirming to all Life. Our work helps clients find simple, practical ways to envision and create this future, which often requires healing, mending and restoring.  The resulting new stories celebrate our interdependence, create beauty and awaken wonder.

Twenty years ago, as a young architect, my eyes were opened to the tremendously negative impact that my profession was having on the environment. Buildings use (and waste) a great deal of energy, water, and materials. Our highly competitive industry contributes substantially to climate change, environmental degradation, and even poor human health from sick building syndrome.

Fortunately, I was blessed with mentors who showed me that, with intelligence, creativity, and cooperation, we can do better. I continue to experience and learn all I can about how nature works, to systematize our approach using sustainability frameworks, to practice and teach others about green design, and to help people cultivate their own emerging new stories.

Out of the ashes of exploitation and power struggles, a new way of being is taking shape.
